The First Episode Psychosis (FEP) Program Intern will provide client-centered and strength-based services to individuals, 14-40 years of age, who are experiencing their first episode of psychosis. This program promotes early identification and provides best treatment practices, as soon as possible. This individual will collaborate with other treatment team members to provide intensive services. The intern will provide services to both the individual and their families, as part of this program, developed from the Best Practices in Schizophrenia Treatment Center at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED). This individual will provide a combination of case management and counseling supports through home, community, and office visits.  This position will be based out of the Albany Park office, although will have capacity to work with clients in-person offsite and remotely.  

Responsibilities

  • Assess client’s personal, medical, emotional, social, and environmental situation through home, community, and office visits. 
  • Provide comprehensive bio-psychosocial assessment services to adolescents, adults, and their families
  • Develop individualized treatment plans with the input of the client and their team, which includes providers and natural supports. Collaborate with members of the client’s team to ensure quality of treatment and coordination of care
  • Serve as an advocate for clients, linking them to needed community services; assess client’s personal, medical, social, emotional, and environmental situation to plan for linkage and treatment course
  • Assist clients in identifying signs and symptoms of de-compensation.  Work collaboratively with clients to identify coping skills to assist in managing symptoms and stressors experienced.
  • Assist clients in learning and improving independent living skills; i.e. personal hygiene, housekeeping skills, nutrition, and shopping for food and personal items
  • Educate and assist clients with applying for entitlements; i.e. Supplemental Security Income, Social Security Disability Insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, and LINK
  • Accompany clients to important appointments in the community and provide support with issues related to housing, substance use, budgeting, social support, and medication.
  • Advocate on client’s behalf and empower clients to advocate on behalf of themselves when appropriate
  • Communicate effectively within the team model for a multi-disciplinary approach to client care.
  • Maintain documentation and chart in compliance with Medicaid, Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Services (CARF), and agency standards
  • Perform other related duties and/or projects as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in counseling and guidance, rehabilitation counseling, social work, education, vocational counseling, psychology, pastoral counseling, family therapy, or related human service field; or bachelor's degree in any other field with two-years of supervised clinical experience in a mental health setting
  • Valid Illinois driver’s license with daily access to a well-maintained vehicle. **Interns will not transport clients in their vehicle**
  • Experience working with adolescents and/or transition age youth and their families.
  • Availability to work late afternoon/evenings, as directed
  • Availability to begin late Summer 2024 until the end of May 2025
  • Availability to attend weekly team meetings, currently on Tuesdays.
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred, not required
